Whom to Love?

Well as emotional the title could sound, but actually this is a rational thought that I read before.

When prophet Ibrahim (pbuh) went through his famous intellectual exercise of contemplating into the sky to recognize or know Allah (SWT) (refer to Surat Al-Anaam verses 75-79) the first judgment he made was actually amazing.

When he saw the first star and how it set,  he said “I love not those that set”. I’ll give myself the right to change the word “set” to be “disappear or vanish” as this really describes what he (pbuh) meant. Prophet Ibrahim is teaching us a rational law that guides our hearts through our minds.

Yes indeed he (pbuh) was absolutely correct….how can you get attached to something that will leave you or you leave it? How can you love something that vanishes, that is not there for you always? Rationally speaking this is not wise or accepted by anyone if s/he gives it a deeper thought.

Any ways, based on that, I would like to ask this question….whom and what to love? and try to be Ibrahimc when you answer.

I love to think, and reflect, even if @ the cash counter. I let my mind race, and link non-related thoughts with one another. Sometimes, when I really have the time, I wonder how I got to what I was thinking, and then I begin to trace my thoughts back to the first thought.
And I think, I developed this “love” of thinking because it does not need any physical resource, and it makes me realise my freedom.

Who to love is a very interesting question that does indeed require some in-depth thought on a personal level. After reading this entry, I took a minute and considered whom we, as humans beings, love. We love our parents, we love our siblings, we love our families, our friends, our jobs, we love people that we’ve met for a moment and people whom have changed our lives and as much as we hate to admit it, we also have love for some materialistic things. But what do all these things have in common? The underlining consistency between all these things is that they all have been given to us by our Creator and our Provider Allah (SWT). Therefore, rationally thinking, would you not love the One whom has given you everything else that you love?

very important idea about love that is nice to bring up to youth since many temporal loves not only are they a waste of time but also wrong… The highest forms of love last a lifetime like the love of Allah, Prophets, knowledge, virtue, activism, etc…

and when we make our temporary loves aligned with the things above then they become great too

    Salamu 3laikum,

In my opinion, who or what to love would be anyone or anything that will lead you closer to Allah sw. For example, the Quran, the words of Allah sw Himself. One only has to pick up the Quran and know that Allah sw is there for us, and is speaking directly to us. What better thing to love than the Quran that will never ‘disappear’, and will forever guide us. Another example would be the Prophet pbuh who has taught us everything we need to know in order to gain Allah sw’s pleasure. Reading, reflecting and implementing what’s written in the Quran and following our beloved Prophet (pbuh) will insah’Allah lead us closer to the One whom we truly love and whose pleasure we seek. Love for Allah sw, His book and His prophet is as good as it gets, and the best way to utilize this emotion.

I’m sure everyone would agree that we should love Allah and His messenger. Another question might be how to love? What does it mean to love Allah and His messenger? I think of the condition of a person who is in love with someone. Who wants to impress her beloved, to constantly please him and earn his love in return. I think of how she loves to hear things about him - anything. And how she’s always thinking of him. And how her heart skips a beat when she hears his name. (For, Believers are those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a tremor in their hearts - Qur’an 8:2). Perhaps this example of human love might shed some light into how our actions might express the love we strive to have for our Lord and His messenger. And Allah is above all examples.
